The Historian
by Elizabeth Kostova
Oh man, I absolutely devoured this! Folklore and history mixed together in dusty foreign libraries, carefully dribbled out drops of suspense, and plenty of adventure mixed in. Add in the wonderfully Gothic tone of the novel, and you have an all around winner for me! I've read the negative reviews for this, and they all have good points. Pages upon pages are spent on describing the landscapes of their travels, the letters are too rich in detail to pass for real letters, and many characters have similar or identical voices. However, none of these elements took away from the story for me. In fact, I think they added to the consistent tone and rich atmosphere. An instant favorite for me from a brilliant author.
