twhaley1990 's review for:
The Ordinary Princess
by M.M. Kaye
I just recently reread this one, and it's still delightful.
When I was a kid, my mom would take me to the local thrift store to get 35ยข books because I loved reading, and we didn't have the money to support my habits at Waldens/Borders/Barns and Noble/Books-A-Million prices. I picked this one up because the 1986 cover was beautiful, and I wanted a break from Sweet Valley High books (which were in abundance in said thrift store).
This book got me into both fantasy and romance. I'd never read a book that was centered around a love story before, and I was captivated. I'm still not sure I have read a sweeter romance to date. The story was quite uncomplicated, but sometimes drama, twists, and turns can be overrated. As many reviewers have already said, aside from an ordinary heroine, the story is a straight forward fairy tale in which you know the destination but enjoy the journey. The illustrations were a nice little touch that reminded me of The Chronicles of Narnia.
This book will always hold a special place in my heart.
