Neon Gods by Katee Robert

4.0

This was so close to being my first 5 star of the year, but a few things kept me from giving it that title. Despite that first sentence being a little more ominous than anticipated, this book slaps. I had SO MUCH fun reading this, I did not want to put it down. The plot, slaps. The spice, fire. The characters, chefs kiss. What’s keeping me from the 5 stars was a few things. I wasn’t prepared for how modern this was. That’s on me though, my brain just ignored that snippet of the blurb - it literally says modern retelling I don’t know what I was expecting. I also, having studied Latin for 5 years, had a hard time with the names of the gods just being titles rather than actual entities (if that makes sense). I wasn’t a fan that if one died, a new one would come forward sheathed that be elected or inherited. It also threw me that none of them had the attributes or powers of the gods we grew up learning about. I will say, their personalities (of the ones we saw) were pretty close. I’ve always been a Zeus anti and a Hades stan. This also started out very “50 shades of grey”, and that was a little concerning. However, the writing, while it isn’t too tier, it’s better than 50 shades and it doesn’t come with all the issues those books came with either.

Now that I’ve gotten past the “issues”, I still had so much fun reading this. I loved Hades. I just wanted to pick him up and put him in my pocket. He’s always been my favorite god and this just put him in the best light. He was attentive, caring, loved his people, loves animals, had so so so much admiration and respect for Persephone. I loved their dynamic. I loved that they were always equals and always wanted to check in with each other to make sure they were both happy. I just want them both to be the happiest lil beans on the planet. The spice was great and I had a great time. I loved the plot line once I got past the political structure and set up of this world. Solid book.
