Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
2.5

Surprisingly, I've never been spoiled for Jane Eyre, but I wanted to read it because it's obviously been referred to often in literature. The setting was atmospherically gothic, and I could feel that something was wrong in the house. The middle was a bit dragged out, and I expected Jane to confront Mr. Rochester since she was more fierce and passionate in childhood. There were a bit too many coincidences that pulled the story along for me. Some of them were predictable and made me roll my eyes,
such as the people who rescued her being her cousins after she'd been crying the entire novel about not having any relatives.
The themes dealt with were classism, religion, and independence, but I found the themes of racism and mental health to be poorly dealt with; but, that was just the times. I could still see myself rereading it in the future though.
