Somewhere in the Deep by Tanvi Berwah

This book had me in the first half. Cool edgy FMC with a troubled past? Check. Fighting unique monsters in a gladiator style pit? Check. Friends to lovers where everyone can tell the characters are more but the characters themselves? Check. Exploring mines with more cool monsters and Shadowmen? Check. Plot twists you do not see coming? Check.

The last half of this book felt like watching a darkly lit scene in a movie. You know something important is happening but the who, what, and where are so hard to make out. You just hope in the next scene you get enough details to figure out what happened. The ending felt rushed. The author spent so much time in the mines that by the time characters emerged it felt like the author was trying to figure out where they were going with it. I ended up skipping through the details and just reading the conversations between characters because I got tired of trying to figure out where the author was taking me.
