Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson
5.0

This was my favorite book in late elementary/early middle school. I must have read it 10 times between 4th and 6th grade. It's long past time to re-read it.

Do you ever feel offended when someone gives your favorite book one star? I do. So, I read the reviews to find out why and the people who wrote reviews (please don't give a book one star without an explanation).

Most of the reviewers were upset by Leslie dying. I understand that people don't want their kids to have to deal with death but most kids read this book between 4th and 8th grades, that's when kids begin to really become aware of death. When I was in 5th grade, a classmate was diagnosed with a brain tumor and eventually died when we were in 8th grade. In fact, I think that Katherine Paterson wrote this after her son's friend died when he was around the age of Jess and Leslie. Even if kids that age don't lose a classmate or someone their age, chances are they have lost a pet or grandparent or elderly neighbor. This book gives parents a chance to read the book too and then have a conversation about death with their kids.
