A.D.: After Death by Scott Snyder

5.0

The more I read from him, the more I feel Scott Snyder really shines in his prose. I loved his short story collection, Voodoo Hearts, and now this (more of an illustrated novella than comic books) really cements his incredible ability with prose.

Which, going along with that, the design of this book is absolutely incredible. Whether it be the more traditional comic pages with panels and gutters, or full-page splashes, or pages of mostly text with small designs around it... every single page is gorgeous. I didn't think I liked Jeff Lemire as an artist (though I always enjoyed his writing), but this book shows how great he really is.

The story, too, is incredibly fascinating, philosophical, and expertly paced and crafted.

I'm struggling to find words because it was an experience unlike any other I've had. These two are amazing creators on their own, and together they've created something brilliant and different and thought-provoking and beautiful.
