The Temptation
by Nikki Sloane
Romantic suspense, intrigue, a celibacy bet, and a fake relationship, wrapped up in the world of the uber rich. Vance and Emerly are brought together seemingly by chance, but there’s definitely much more to it. The disappearance of a mutual friend puts them on a path with a common goal, but differing outcomes, so they decide to work together. The celibacy bet was something Vance made with his friend before she disappeared, and he feels a loyalty to her to see it through, ninety days with no sex. But when Emerly enters the picture, his will is severely tested. Emerly has her own motives, and Vance is going to help her achieve her goal, but their chemistry is something she didn’t count on. Circumstances come together that end up with them in a fake relationship, but how long will it stay fake, and even when she agrees to help him with his bet, will they be able to hold out?
There is a lot to this story that could drop into predictable trope territory, but just when you think it’s going to do that, there’s a twist, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well the story stayed out of that potential rut. Emerly is quite an interesting character, as well, a highly skilled safe cracker, working for a security company, with a history of pickpocketing. Of course, when Vance learns of this, he’s not only intrigued, but seeing her in action, actually turns him on. They have great chemistry, actually it’s quite off the charts. As they navigate his bet, trying not to take things between them too far, they definitely walk right up to the line and teeter over it many times. The shower scene in Monaco was enough to make me have to stop for a couple minutes for a breather, so incredibly hot. And as the plot unfolds, the story becomes more and more intriguing and engrossing. The relationships are complicated, and it’s nice to see that some of the usual devices for drama aren’t used, and least completely. The tension, both in and out of the bedroom is excellent, and the development of Emerly and Vance’s relationship feels so organic, natural, and right. I loved their interactions and how they played off each other. And their HEA was excellent.
