Between Life & Death by Jaclyn Kot

Did not finish book. Stopped at 60%.
DNF at 60%.

DO NOT dive into the author’s socials before reading this book. Her posts spoil this book. I didn’t  realize how badly it was spoiled, but she really does throw out the big reveal moments in her promotional posts. Makes all the foreshadowing and build up of a mystery completely pointless.

Every time Sage internally questions something she writes it off immediately. She never digs into anything that seems off or questionable. OR something could be obvious and she has no reaction or thought whatsoever. Like it’s completely normal. To me it just comes off as a poor way for the author to keep the mystery going.

Also really bothered by so much modern language in a setting that is very much not modern.
“Body count” “smut books” it just doesn’t match the rest of the world.

Von has been written so superficially so far. There’s been zero depth explored to his character. He’s just all super quotable MMC moments. And if I have to read another copy and paste description of him from Sage’s POV - “obsidian eyes, dark hair in a top not, tight leather pants” we get it, he’s dark and sexy.

The plot is also very weak. The setup of this book is to find her brother, but at 60% we are no closer to finding anything out or getting to him than at the beginning. Which would be fine I guess if the weird mysteries and cryptic shit being said to Sage also had some movement and reveals. Instead.. it’s just a lot of nothing.
