Lost Kingdom: The Quest for Empire and the Making of the Russian Nation by Serhii Plokhy

It's well done, but ultimately its content has little to do with its title. This is a book about the history of the the relationship between Russians, Ukrainians and Belorussians, not a pure book about the history of Russia. Thus it ends up being fairly boring.
