The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman

4.0

After reading this book for what feels like forever, I must award it a solid 3.75-4 star rating.

This book is a very interesting interpretation of the fall of Jerusalem, and the stronghold of Masada that held many Jewish people. The most interesting thing is that in the acknowledgement section of this novel Alice Hoffman shares that a lot of the artifacts that's she mentions in this book are real and can be found in varying museums.

As I started reading this novel, I did not have a difficult time getting into it and enjoying the prose. I did, however, have issues mainly with, what I felt, was not need repetition. I felt that at times I had read the same paragraph over a number of times. As the book progressed this repetition stopped and I was able to fully enjoy the story.

I liked that the books parts seemed to follow some kind of pattern as the women who became Dovekeepers, following the newest to the oldest. I also enjoyed that we got many perspectives from the women and were able to watch them grow not only as characters but a group of women who are friends and care for one another deeply.

I can't pinpoint who my favourite character in this book is, I also cannot pinpoint my favourite part as they all have a unique story to tell and a lesson to share.

I do recommend this book. I feel that people who enjoy historical fiction might enjoy this more... But with the romance, and the magic aspects, anyone can enjoy this wonderful story.
