I expected this book to be superficial in plot, with a string of gimmicky characters to move it along. I’ll admit it took me some time to get into the story. Harold and Maureen are closed off and hard to like, and the plot met my expectations.
However, once Harold meets Martina the story and characters seemed to transform. I enjoyed the last three quarters of the book and was satisfied with the character development that came with it. It’s a touching story with a beautiful ending that explores regret, grief and growing old.
