We Dream of Space
by Erin Entrada Kelly
We Dream of Space is essentially its own perfect little universe. Erin Entrada Kelly’s writing is a simple yet effective telescope that gives us a beautiful glimpse into the lives of the stars of the book: Fitch, Cash, and Bird. Like many of the characters I encounter, it took a little while for me to become fully invested in their stories, but once I did, I longed to be able to get on a space shuttle (not ship) and travel to meet them.
I could relate to Bird the most, a seventh grader who wishes to become the first female space shuttle commander and loves drawing schematics of different gadgets, but feels like a nobody in her family and at school. Her twin, Fitch, spends a lot of time at the arcade and has a hard time controlling himself around others when he’s angry. Their older brother Cash loves basketball, but is also in the seventh grade because he flunked last year and feels like he can’t do anything well. The three siblings have drifted apart due to their dysfunctional family, and we watch as they await the launch of the Challenger shuttle.
I love how the main characters each have their own decisions and thoughts and problems that make them seem like normal kids. The upcoming Challenger launch, which all three learn about in class and which Bird fervently expects, orbits in the background as they experience troubles at school, internal conflicts, and debris flying in the way of their individual aspirations.
Although it may look pretty long, or seem like a typical story about almost-teenagers growing-up, We Dream of Space is most definitely not. The stories of Cash, Fitch, and Bird link together to form a beautiful constellation that shines brightly amid their complicated, ever-expanding universe.
It is a warm, make-you-feel-something book, not to mention its title and themes, and I hope you try it out!
Also sorry about all the space metaphors. I couldn’t help myself :)
