The Kiss of Deception

After hearing mixed reviews, I was really worried with how I'd feel about this book but around page 100, I was confident that I wouldn't drop it.
The main issue I've heard about this book was how slow it was. This book is a hefty 492 pages and it honestly felt like two books in one. The first part was slow with a lot of events happening. I felt like the romance came too quickly and the developments weren't enough, yet this all was spread out in around 200 pages so it was a really strange sort of pacing. The second part (after the reveal) was really really slow for me and the story dragged for some period of time. The writing didn't really do enough for me to not be bothered by the pacing.
Still the plot overall is interesting. I'm very curious about where it will lead to and the last 50 pages of the book were the most enjoyable parts for me.
The world building however felt lacking. I felt like the history given to us said very little about each Kingdom. Heck, we don't even know why there's a war why the three kingdoms hate each other. There's still so much that can be done so I'm hoping the next book addresses this. The magic system also seems very interesting so I'm hoping to see more of that too.
Now the characters. I decidedly early who I thought was the prince and who was the assassin and I'm happy because I think I would have liked this book less had it turned the other way around. My favorite character was the assassin but I prefer the prince/Lia because it just makes more sense to me. Still, I felt like the characters in general are sort of bland despite having 500 pages with them. I was neutral with Lia but only started to really like in the last 10% of the book (and that's pretty late for an MC imo).
I enjoyed this overall but I have no interest in reading the rest of the series. I think this will be much more loved by someone who connects to the characters more.
