I felt this book in my soul: reading it was like reading home.
I could smell the acidic humus of a moist rhodendron-covered stream bank and see the shadowy ghosts of the brook trout dancing in the riffles. The story and the characters were almost secondary, and still I came to love them so much that I cried through the last 30 minutes of the book.
I thought sure that the author was a grizzled old man of the mountains, so strong was the sense of place, but no. I'm glad, because what an author. I look forward to what comes next.
