Priestess of the White by Trudi Canavan
3.0

I hold Trudi Canavan's books to high expectation, because she's produced some very fine novels over the course of her career. This one though, I know is one of her earlier novels, so I wasn't expecting quite as much from it- and there is evidence that she hasn't quite developed her style and characters completely in this one. I enjoyed it, but I don't think I'd recommend it as one of my favourites.

The plot was interesting enough, if not fairly common; two warring countries, magic, sorcerers etc. etc. Fairly standard stuff, although told well. There's a large cast of characters, some only briefly appearing for a chapter- perhaps to add in the viewpoint of a 'normal' citizen? Although it seems a little trite and most of these sections could have been told in a different way.

The characters were okay, but lacked strong personalities. Emerahl was by far both the most interesting and the most developed, and definitely the character I looked forward to the chapters of most. I think if it came to warring between Emerahl and the White in later books, she'd be the one I'll be rooting for, regardless of Auraya posing as the main protagonist. She was very bland and I didn't really relate, as she seemed to have little personality; as did the other Whites.

Good enough stock fantasy, but nothing special.
