I feel like this book was a tiny bit better than the previous book (Gild). I enjoyed this one a little bit more than the last one. Hence, the extra 1/2 star. It felt like there was more momentum, and Auren's character annoyed me a little less. I liked getting to see Rip's character and some of the other Fourth army characters. I would have liked to see a little more of the saddles and guard characters more but I understand (based on what I've read so far) for the purposes of this novel (and I believe series) that Auren is going to become an important figure for the Fourth army.
The twist/reveal/cliffhanger at the end was something I guessed but it was still interesting to watch unfold.
