Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare
3.0
I had to read this play for school and it was (excruciatingly) spread out over two months. I mean, it's not how long it took for us too read it that was my main problem, but two months for a two hour play is just outrageous.
Anyways, the characters were multifaceted and the question of 'Is murder okay if it's for the good of Rome?' is certainly an interesting one, but that discussion seemed to get lost by Act 4. Act 4 starts a year and a half later, in a completely different setting, with the new central themes being revenge and Ancient Roman war practice. And I absolutely didn't care. It felt like a completely different play and that was incredibly jarring for me. Additionally, I'm beginning to think that (after reading Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, and Macbeth) Shakespeare just didn't know how to write a conclusion without killing off the majority of his main characters. Which is maybe characteristic of the Shakespearean 'tragedy,' but after a few times, it gets really old. 2.5 stars.
