I found this book due to the recent asshattery surrounding the Hugos for this year. Apparently, Mr Kloos felt the same and so he pull his book from the nominations. I respected that, so I thought I should give some of his books a read. WORTH IT.

I'm not huge into military sci-fi, but Kloos does a very good job of focusing the story on the main character and not drowning the reader in military jargon or policies and for not constantly explaining the minutiae. He trusts that you get it, or that you're smart enough to figure it out in the writing - and he's considerate enough to make sure it's there for you. A+

ToE is about Andrew Greyson, a welfare rat (large part of the future population appears to be poor) living in a restricted area of Boston in 2108. Life in the blocks is hard, and food is crap, so Andrew takes what he feels is the best option out of his situation and joins the military. From there he finds friends, picks up some pretty useful skills, meets a rather amazing woman and sees both the good and the bad parts of being part of a police force on Earth while he tries to find a way to space to live his dream and be with the woman he loves.

There are a lot of things you can say about the plot, but when I try to explain them it comes out sounding rather trivial, which is a great disservice to the work.

Good read, not heavy, and doesn't browbeat you with its ideas.
