I can see the tone that this novel was trying to go for, but I didn't fully buy into it. The shifting and building into the thriller portions weren't quite smooth to me, and instead the ramping to the finale felt jarring and more disparate from the domestic family issues story and coming-of-age earlier portion of the book. Just having read The Secret History, the similarities and maybe part-inspiration of this to that book feel palpable, though this story doesn't take place on a university campus. Write more after dinner maybe.
