Lessons by Ian McEwan
4.0

He tells a good story, with impressive prose, I needed to take my time with this book, and regularly look up words like 'emollient' and 'lapidary' to fully understand and appreciate his work. It's not a relaxing read, typically, Ian McEwan explores some uncomfortable areas of childhood and adulthood. He covers the entire lifetime of Roland (his protagonist) and describes most of his key relationships, parents, children, step-children, grandchildren, teachers, friends and lovers - and doesn't quite succeed in covering all this ground satisfactorily, I wanted an extra hundred or so pages as he got to Roland's later years.
But a very good book, no doubt.
