Big Chief
by Jon Hickey
emotional
mysterious
tense
medium-paced
While the first part of this meanders a little slowly, the last third feels like it comes together. There is a bit (lot?) of confusion around how/why the main character got himself into all of this, though he’s given enough back story and flashbacks that you would think it had been covered? In some ways I understood Mack, and in many other ways he just flabbergasted me.
A lot of portraits of what greed and power does to people, but also some realistic notes of how everything doesn’t go away when elections are held or battles are won. But mostly about power and the desperate need to hold onto it.
