The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides

4.75

Can't decide if it's 4 or 4.5 stars yet, but let's be optimistic.

My god this man can WRITE. It's a fascinating book for sure. An incredible exploration of the male gaze and its obsession with untouchable, tragic innocence. Every single narrative decision is completely brilliant and the perspective is unbearable to read at times which makes it fantastic. The way the story is pieced together and slowly moves through the events, only to reveal nothing substantial at all would be frustating, if it wasn't exactly the point.

The closing paragraph is one of the best written book endings I've ever read, and perfectly sums up every idea Eugenides tried to convey.

"It didn't matter in the end how old they had been, or that they were girls, but only that we had loved them." Yeah, exactly. The girls that get it, get it.

No but seriously I loved this book but if a man ever tells me it's his favorite? I'm running away so fast it's not even funny.
