Lost City of the Incas by Hiram Bingham
2.0
Universally considered required reading before a visit to Machu Picchu but I am here to tell fellow Peruvian travelers to just skip it in favor of Mark Adams' infinitely more entertaining {book: Turn Right at Machu Picchu} by Mark Adams. Much of Bingham's conclusions from his adventures in Peru have been debunked, and he isn't much of a compelling writer to boot. Adams' book, on the other hand, grounds you in the historical record of Bingham's "discoveries" while presenting a more modern, less culturally biased account of Bingham's work in the Andes.
