Carmilla by J. Sheridan Le Fanu
4.0

All I knew going into this book is that it was a pre-Dracula lesbian vampire story. Although it didn’t really sell me on the fear that it was aiming for, the romance comes through much more effectively. I liked it a lot more than Dracula (maybe partially bc of how short it is)

I’m a bit of a dumbass, so when the romance elements were so obvious immediately I assumed that the main character had to be a man in love with Carmilla who would later find out that she had a relationship with someone else in the village. It took me almost half the book to realize that she’s a woman and that’s why that level of closeness was allowed for the time.

I also really liked the weird vampire lore, like how her name needs to be an anagram of the name she had in life. There’s not enough weirdness in modern vampire stories bc all of them are based on Dracula!

Highly recommend, especially since you could easily read it in an afternoon!
