The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
As entertaining, joyous, and inspiring as a trip to the DMV. Tolkien is obviously very well-read and influential, but the writing in these books is so, so dry. I could only see this being used for a history class or if you just can't enough of fictional genealogies and bad poetry. The films are pretty good.
