Love and Ruin
by Paula McLain
Every time I read about Hemingway I get infuriated. Hemingway, the author, is one thing, and a good thing at that. Hemingway, the man, is quite another. Selfish, arrogant, demanding, volatile, and sometimes a little insecure. But this book was about Martha (Marty) Gellhorn, his third wife. She was a formidable woman: selfish, arrogant, demanding, volatile, and sometimes a little insecure. I can't say that I liked her, but I definitely admired her. She was full of tenacity and was constantly striving to make her own way in a man's world. Although she and Ernest had no children of their own, she had an endearing relationship with his three sons, Bumby, Gigi, and Patrick. She was a genuinely accomplished woman who despised the idea of being known only as Hemingway's wife. I was happy when she finally told her "Rabbit" to hop off.
One thing I didn't get was the chapters in italics. What did that indicate?
