X-O Manowar Volume 1: By the Sword by Robert Venditti

4.0

I'm way late to the game in reading this particular Valiant series. I tried ordering volume one of this from three different sources, and it never quite worked out, so I eventually forgot that I didn't have it.

It arrived at some point yesterday while I was at work, and I began reading it first thing this morning.

It's very good. A fourth century Visigoth with The Biggest Grudge Against Rome in history is kidnapped by colonizing aliens and enslaved. While escaping the aliens' ship he encounters their mega-weapon, a suit of armor that has to deem the user worthy. It's killed countless of the aliens, but guess which slave protagonist is somehow worthy? The Visigoth then escapes, arriving back on Earth in 2012 because, why not?

It's a super fun time-travel/space adventure story that you couldn't really do in Marvel or DC without it seeming very silly. At Valiant, it works perfectly, and I"m excited to see how it fits into the larger universe.
