You're Not Supposed to Die Tonight by Kalynn Bayron

i really liked the beginning and general slasher vibes it gave off but the plot twist mid/end of it didn’t do it for me tbh
spoilers below for anyone not wanting to know the twist:
i was expecting a serial killer slasher type book based on the description and so the whole owl cult and magic reveal definitely killed it for me. i don’t mind those kind of vibes, but for this it just felt so underwhelming! i really wanted it to be an actual slasher and not a cult sacrificing teens to a lake?
otherwise, it’s alright. it keeps the tension going, the teenagers aren’t obnoxious and there’s a few horror references here and there which is fun! the main character is a black queer girl and the narrator does a good job portraying her and the other characters!
this is definitely worth it if you want a black girl protagonist who’s also queer, dating a girl and refusing to give up easily.
