The Book of Illusions by Paul Auster

3.0

Intriguing and unsatisfying ... I believe this book has a great deal of merit, at minimum in its entertainment value. Perhaps it's simply my recent choice of novels, but I tire of the central character being an obsessive writer and/or lit professor. (Last three books I read = The Book of Illusions, The Professor of Desire, The Dogs of Babel, How to Save Your Own Life). The significant amount of sheer (as in transparent) male fantasy also tarnished the novel for me. (Bath tub sex scene was ridiculous.) The explanation of plot twists, when resolved, did not meet my expectations.

Still, a profusion of interesting ideas, a convoluted plot and a great deal of intelligence lingers in the wings. I would recommend this novel and I fully intend to read Paul Auster's earlier novels.
