An Artist of the Floating World by Kazuo Ishiguro

2.0

This book has very little in the way of plot and takes the form of the narrator's meandering memoir, both of which I have been very happy with in other works (e.g. Dostoevsky's House of the Dead and Tolstoy's The Death of Ivan Ilyich), but I struggled not to put down Ishiguro's text the whole time. Technically well written, I found there to be a lack of literary innovation in the writing, but mostly I had neither interest in nor respect for the protagonist or indeed any of the supporting characters—all of whom I found bland. In short, while there is nothing I found to be technically poor in this book, I again found that Ishiguro is not my cup of tea.
