Sapphire's Flight by K.S. Villoso

5.0

Sapphire's Flight is an excellent conclusion to the Agartes Epilogues epic fantasy trilogy. I say this, but it's hard to put into words how rich the world-building is and how deep the characters are. It's also extremely shocking to me that this book and series have such a low number of reviews. I'm hoping with the author getting another series picked up by a traditional publisher that this series and the rest of her works will get the attention they deserve.

Anyway, I'll do a series review soon, but let's get back to this particular novel.

Sapphire's Flight picks up where Aina's Breath left off and brings many characters from this world together in an interesting and epic final battle. The first part of the novel focuses a little bit more on the relationships between the characters as we watch them work together on their goal. This part felt a little bit more like the traditional heroe's journey kind of thing because these characters are a little more involved in events now, after what they'd been through.

At times it felt like a constant show of a certain character's selfish antics and mistakes and this ridiculous character was done so well and so realistically that I both tired of and loved the whole thing at the same time. There were a few too many love scenes between different characters that just felt slow and added to the love triangle, but at the same time sometimes in the conversations I would see how realistic the portrayal of a certain character's rage-inducing personality was and I would realize that these scenes made the characterizations work.

The only thing that really didn't work for me was the witty banter between Enosh and Sapphire. Next to everything else that was so well done it didn't feel as real.

The parts that stood out the most to me, the parts I loved so well, were the parts with Kefier and the Boarshind fighters. This story was handled so well and so full of unexpected little details and reveals that it was gripping. If you thought you knew what was going to happen by the end of book 2 I have news for you...

I'm going to add my voice to that of the other reviewers who said that this book had me up at 2am for several nights in a row. Excellent stuff. If you haven't yet you need to go start this series from the beginning with Jaeth's Eye. If you're a fantasy fan, you'll absolutely love it. If you're not a fantasy fan you may well become one. It's going on my list of hidden gems.
