After years of home school, August's parents decide it is time for him to enter mainstream school. He's been in home school due to the fact that he was born with an extremely rare and severe facial deformity, and much of his life up to that point had been spent in and out of hospitals undergoing numerous surgeries. In fifth grade, as middle school begins, he starts attending a small private school. The story is both jarring and inspirational. I liked the way the author tells the tale through various characters eyes: August, his sister, his friends. It gives a unique perspective to how everyone is feeling as they undergo this huge change in life. I'd recommend this to teachers who might be looking for books on diversity or anti-bullying.
