challenging emotional sad tense medium-paced
I am a bit surprised this was the Pulitzer winner. The premise is definitely interesting, but I've read much more compelling stories of the Reconstruction era. I didn't love how everything kind of neatly came together either. It took me out of the reality of that time period. But it was definitely an interesting read and I enjoyed following the stories of each different narrator.
