The Ground That Devours Us
by Kalla Harris
adventurous
dark
medium-paced
I really loved the setup of this one so much and when I first started reading I was really enthralled by it all, I just feel like I somehow lost a bit of my interest after a while.
The book was really entertaining and this was certainly a fascinating world. Our main characters were enjoyable ones and I did like getting to know them through the pages. While the relationships in this story had a lot of potential, it really felt rushed to me and a bit surface level. We had great well-developed characters, but somehow the evolution in their interactions and exchanges were always kind of a let-down.
It was nice to see Ripley find herself and see how it changed the dynamic between her and Ruby. I also loved the tension between Ruby and X even though it was way too insta-lust for my personal preference. Enemies-to-lovers are often disappointing to me, I think it is a bit overused and I always expect more of it somehow, but it might be just me.
I'm someone who usually can imagine all that is going on on the pages in my head, but I was a bit lost with this one. Not sure if it was lacking sufficient descriptions, or I was just a bit off, but I kept struggling to see it all clearly and understand it all.
Overall, it was still very fun to read, I was happy about the ending, and I'd say that it's a good pick for anyone who enjoys YA dystopian paranormal stories.
Thanks to MTMCTours and EntangledTeen for the copy. All opinions are my own.
