apechild 's review for:
Northanger Abbey
by Nancy Butler, Janet Lee
Oo, I'm like a giddy kipper. Absolutely loved this. And I'm desperate to know what other classics have been translated into comic book form. I'd never suggest this should replace reading the original - it's just like films though; they are artistic interpretations of the original classic, and its interesting to see the different ways people find to portray them. Although I have my favourite films/series versions of Austen's books, I've never found a Northanger Abbey version I really loved, so this is the best so far. I've still not read all of her books (Emma and Mansfield Park still to go), and although I didn't find Northanger Abbey her best, I did really enjoy it.
Anyway, the comic book! Love the art style and the facial expressions and angles to express those feelings bubbling under polite English facades. I wouldn't have been so sure if Austen would have worked as a comic book, but I literally devoured this today whilst eating chocolates and drinking tea.... the chocolate might be contributing a little to the giddiness, but nevermind. It did also remind me that although Henry Tilney is a good guy, he's certainly not the most exciting of heros, and can be a wee bit dry, and even condescending. They're certainly down on their women. There's one bit he makes a comment that it doesn't matter if Catherine isn't that intelligent and well-read, because she's pretty... and then in the whole Isobella - Captain Tilney (older brother thing) the blame is considered to lie completely with Isobella; for no one man would be upset over another man showing his love attentions. He'd ONLY be upset by his love flirting back. Apparently!
I'm going to have to look out for more of these comics.
