The Maiden Ship by Micheline Ryckman

3.0

"There was something to be said for the forward motion of the sea, for a destination on the horizon."

I've been meaning to read this one for months now and decided to finally pick it up. It was a very fun, fast read. It has a good cast of characters, history shrouded in mystery, magic hidden in plain sight, and evil to overcome. And, of course, it has ships! And the sea!

At times it became a little more tell than show, particularly near the end. There was no need to show everything, but at the same time it was done in a very here are the facts kind of way and the story lost some of its flow.

I will definitely be picking up the sequel, The Lion of the Sea, when it releases in 2021 to find out where Dain's story takes him next. The ending left a lot of questions open.
