Last Night at the Telegraph Club
by Malinda Lo
We follow Lily, a young girl in 1950´s San Fransisco and the asian culture back then. We see Lily finding herself and dealing with the discrimination with being gay and Chinese, she has to balance being ”a good Chinese girl” and being herself. She finds comfort in the telegraph club, a queer club that her friend brings her too
I really liked lily as a character and reading through her pov, I felt like she was easy to empathize with and understand. It was really fun to see her journey with discovering herself and finding this new part of her identity and what that meant for her! Also their relationship together was just so cute and the whole environment at the telegraph club was so fun
I also really liked the authors writing style, it really worked for me. I didn’t get emotionally attached enough for this to be a 5 star read but I did really like a lot
This is one of those books that really makes you think about life and society everything we as humans have gone through to get to where we are. It really made me appreciate how far we have come as a society and how much better life can be nowadays compared to back then for lgbtq+ people. Of course there’s still a long way to go and a lot of shit still happens but its improvement<3
