Something Cryptid This Way Comes by Susan Scott Shelley

I ended up skimming quite a significant portion of this book. Somehow it felt like a constant info-dump, but without any actual info being given. There are tens of side characters who are constantly a part of the story, but they never play a bigger part than just being names or sometimes where they work. It was distracting, confusing, and added nothing to the story.

More time was spent with these filler characters than the main characters one-on-one, and a yawn-inducing amount of time was spent describing every single action the characters took, from walking somewhere, opening doors, petting the dogs a hundred times, etc.

The premise of the story is cute and relatively unique, but as far as substance, there’s not much there. At times it felt like an ad for a fictional podcast.

I would’ve loved to see more about the MCs reconnecting in this new way after so many years as best friend. What we did get was sweet, although I was expecting more angst, if not just a smidge of pain, considering there’s 25 years of pining supposedly going on here.

There was a lot of potential for me, but the constant unnecessary details about things that had no importance or impact on the story really dragged it down. There was more focus on introducing the multi-author series than on the story itself, and it was quite off-putting.

Thank you to GRR for the ARC.
