Observatory Mansions by Edward Carey

I seriously picked this book up because I loved the cover. Though I am a fair mess of a person, I have a deep love of categorization and collections--in my whole fantastic little library, one of my very favorite books is a compendium of underwater creatures scientifically ordered and complete with plate illustrations (Figure A, something somethingus of the Kingdom blah...). It thrills me. I can't really explain it. So when I came upon this novel about a strange little fellow who kept something of a personal museum, I indulged. And I had a great time. It is weird and wonderful.
