There are some books that make me want to be an English teacher and this is one of them. This feels like it needs to be included on a literature syllabus. I’m thinking about how powerful and engaging it would have been to study a coming-of-age novel about young Antiguan girl and the themes and symbolism that Jamaica Kincaid weaves into this short but memorable piece of work.
