One Piece, Vol. 18: Ace Arrives
by Eiichiro Oda
adventurous
emotional
funny
fast-paced
➽ The crew finally reaches the Kingdom of Alabasta! Volume 18 had a lot of great moments and I was excited to get to know Vivi's country and the brewing civil war a bit better. We also see more of the Baroque Works agents that we haven't seen before, such as Mr. 1, Miss Doublefinger and Mr. 2! Crocodile/Mr. 0 is planning something sinister for Alabasta (called Operation Utopia) and things seem to be moving along - so Vivi is slowly running out of time. I don't know if I mentioned it yet, but I loved the mystery surrounding Crocodile and I'm really enjoying him as a villain so far!
➽ We also see Smoker again and meet Ace, Luffy's brother and a member of the Whitebeard Pirates! Smoker and Tashigi set sail to Alabasta in a previous volume and ended up in the same port city as the Strawhats. Luffy stirs up trouble immediately upon arrival, but this time he's not alone. Ace is also there - something the crew learned just before departing Drum Island! I found Ace an intriguing character, due to his cool fire powers and the fact that he's Luffy's older brother. I have to admit that we didn't really get to know him though, so I'm not too attached to him yet. I hope we learn a bit more about his journey!
