The setting was effective but not intriguing — takes place in the Southwest but an authoritarian/strictly conservative version of the US stuck in an ambiguous but resource-intensive war that, somehow, drives the population to live like it’s the Wild West. Lesbian main character (Esther) runs away from home to join the Librarians, a group of women who distribute state-approved materials to far flung towns. Esther fears she is doomed to spread evil bc she is a lesbian and wants to do good to cancel out all the bad.

Not shockingly, the Librarians actually distribute “deviant” materials on behalf of the resistance. Also they’re all gay.
