something i have to say that's been on my mind since i was about halfway through the book: i think this book is overhyped. i was very excited to find a first edition copy of this book for 75 cents at a used book store, especially after all i've heard about. alas, i was left a bit disappointed. there's some good character moments in here and, of course, plenty of spirk. but overall, it was just okay. some of the characterization is a bit odd and the dialogue is, to put it simply, kinda bad. it's very clunky most of the time and nobody says the person they're speaking to's name that many times in conversation. also, what was up with scotty's accent? the author went all in on it, but then didn't even write "keptin" when chekov says captain? the priorities there are all off. i thought the overall plot was interesting, with the romulans using time alteration to stop star fleeet from forming (makes me wonder if the strange new worlds episode tommorrow and tommorrow and tommorrow was inspired ny this book), but not very well executed. i like the continued mentioned that spock and kirk are destined to be together in any universe and their final moments in the alternate timeline got me a little.

overall, some interesting stuff, but nothing to write home about. i feel like people only obsess over it because of the gay stuff and not it actually being a great book (although i do commend della van hise for getting this published, it's impressive what she got away with before they edited it).
