Capture the Crown by Jennifer Estep

3.0

I really enjoyed the majority of this book because the world building was great and I loved the fantasy aspects of it!

What I did not love was Gemma’s continued recklessness. I understand the need for her to put herself in the dangerous situations to keep the story progressing. However, there were several situations where she had these inner monologues about how she SHOULD leave Morta because she knew how dangerous it was.. but then she just needed to know more about Milo’s plans, so she just couldn’t leave yet. It was only a matter of time before her true identity was revealed and she was caught, so it just seemed kind of repetitive and stupid on her part.

The relationship between Gemma and Leo was alright. There wasn’t a ton of progression, even though this book is advertised as a fantasy romance. Any time they got close and she felt the heat between them, she pulled away. Maybe the romance aspect will progress further in the remaining books.

I liked the friendship growth between Gemma, Delmira, & Raco. I hope Gemma can eventually forgive Delmira because I really liked her character and I’m interested to see what her power is.

I am invested and excited to read the rest of the books!
