I loved Black Cake and I think Wilkerson's second novel is exceptional. While I preferred Black Cake, Good Dirt is absolutely going to be an enthralling read for people who liked Black Cake. Wilkerson uses little known American History to build out the family story in this one. Her themes around how trauma shapes a person's life is explores via her protagonist Ebby. Ebby tries to run away from her equally traumatic events in her adult life, when they come to greet her in the face, thus forcing her to come to terms with the traumatic event that's defined her life.
Like Black Cake, Wilkerson weaves different timelines and character perspectives together to create a tapestry of a story. I personally enjoy that kind of storytelling, it's rather immersive. Looking forward to her third novel!
