The Year of Our War
by Steph Swainston
It is the year of our war 2015; for over 2000 years, the Emperor and his Circle of 50 immortals have fought the Insect hordes invading the Fourlands. Now, the Circle is ominously divided and only the Messenger Jant Shira can discover the truth about the Insects.
This was a good fantasy novel with a different bent from your usual swords and sorcery. The society is interestingly sculpted -- the Circle of immortals is composed of the best of each field, and can be challenged and replaced at any time by anyone who is better. Unusually for a fantasy novel, I think that it's a book that deserves a sequel.
