The Beauty in Breaking: A Memoir
by Michele Harper
DID NOT FINISH: 66%
I’m a doctor and thought this would be a good read. The beginning was pretty decent but unfortunately it devolved into Harper constantly harping on how hard her life was as a doctor and the constant forced mentions of yoga. I went through similar training, just a touch longer than her. Although my childhood experiences are in no way similar to hers I think I can somewhat relate with her finding a good outlet while in medical training and practice, which I believe is essential to the mental well-being of any physician. However, I’d never mention my own hobbies over and over the way she does even in a casual conversation with somebody. I think it was all just a bit dramatic and overdone. Like I said, first half was good. As an aside, the hatred she felt towards some of her patients right off the bat was a bit concerning. If you don’t like these ‘difficult’ patients then EM is absolutely not the field for you.
