I think the obvious parallel here is to Firefly because that is the platonic ideal of a ragtag starship crew from diverse backgrounds fighting against the odds... but I think this book has just enough DNA from a lot of different places (that aren't, say, network television) that makes it feel fresh. And even though it's one action set-piece after another, they all have enough thought put into them that it still made me eager to read.
