"Time Travelling with a Hamster" by Ross Welford is one of the best children's literature novels I've ever read.
The characters just come alive, so beautiful and complex. Each one of them has multiple layers and evolves unpredictably through the story, even the neighbourhood bully and the "Stepsister From Hell".
The plot is convoluted enough to catch you by surprise several times over, and at the same time simple enough to allow you to keep turning the pages at supersonic speed, with no need to waste time flicking back to check details.
The writing style is amazing, with the first-person narrator managing to keep his humour even in the most dire circumstances (and there are some pretty bleak themes that are tackled in this novel: the death of a parent, bullying, animal cruelty...)
Kudos to the author for the little hidden gem of anti-ableism that shines in the epilogue thanks to Grandpa Byron (who is probably my favourite character in the book).
